8 Steps to Fireworks Safety for Your Pets During the Super Bowl
The hometown team is in the hometown Super Bowl. The Los Angeles Rams face the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI in Inglewood, California, on Sunday.
And while that is cause for celebration, when the fireworks start, that can be a scary time for pets.
Use this time to review your emergency plan, microchip your pet, and complete and update your microchip registration. Check the list below for some tips to help you and your pet cope with the fireworks that are sure to erupt no matter the outcome – but that said, #ramshouse!
- Emergency checklist: Include the needs of your pet as part of your emergency plan and checklist (see checklist below).
- Name tag: If your pet is not wearing a collar with an ID tag, now is the best time to get one.
- Microchip and update registration: Double check that your pet is microchipped and that the chip is registered with updated contact information (learn more here).
- Far from the madding crowds: Avoid crowded events, parades, and other gatherings.
- Workout: Prepare for the night by giving your pets lots of exercise during the day. It will help with your pet’s overall stress and anxiety levels, and some may sleep right through the fireworks.
- Create a safe space: Head indoors well ahead of the first boom of fireworks. Lower the blinds. Close windows. Provide a bed, crate, or room where they feel comfortable. Provide a special chew or toy to distract them.
- Netflix and chill pill: Talk to your vet about anti-anxiety chews, drops, or other remedies that can help your pet relax. Some over-the-counter meds are now available at your local pet store as well. And turn on the TV or radio to help mask the noise.
- Wrap up: Confining movement in dogs and cats actually has a calming effect on them, which is why you might want to consider an anti-anxiety wrap or coat.
