Campers Get Creative for National Pet Loss Prevention Month
July is National Lost Pet Prevention Month. At the Michelson Found Animals Foundation, we take pride in the work we’ve done to help thousands of pets return to their homes and provide resources to those looking for pet safety tips. We also LOVE hearing about creative new ways to educate on the importance of microchipping and registering pets. We wanted to share this inspiring story shared with us by our National Shelter Engagement Director, Gina Knepp regarding a group of summer campers whose camp counselor found a fun, unique way to implement lost pet prevention into their program.
From Denise Deisler, CEO of the Jacksonville Humane Society – “Our summer campers have been learning about pet loss prevention through a new activity that includes scanning stuffed dogs and cats for microchips. Groups of kids are assigned a ‘lost pet’ and must work together to complete a series of tasks to reunite the pet with their owner. They first check for a collar and tag and then scan for a chip, using the Found Animals registry to find the owner’s info. To get the full experience of reuniting, they even have to call the ‘owner’ (our Education Manager) to notify them that the pet is at the shelter. They also learn about facial recognition technology and Petco Love Lost during the activity. Campers love it and are learning incredibly important lessons about lost pets.”
